Back in 1976 George Lucas filmed one of the greatest episodes in the Star Wars trilogy, Episode 4 : A New Hope. The Cantina scene was shot in a building in Tunisia and now the original site is going to be destroyed! This building is very important to a large amount of people, including one French man who informed us of the on going online petition. This organization is trying to pull together enough money and enough support to keep the building standing. So far, they have already received the signatures of Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Derek Thompson (Star Wars conceptual artist) and Nick Maley (SFX operator and Cantina character Dannik Jerriko) just to name a few. hello, I am a French fan of star wars. I put one line a petition to save the
building which was used in 1976 by george lucas to appear as the cantina of
mos eisely in episode 4.

This building is located in Tunisia, and for more than 2 years i'm fighting
to protect it against its being razed to the ground. A lot of french fans
are providing support to this fight

The Cantina is now saved from direct destruction, but it needs to be
restored to avoid further degradations on the remaining parts of the
building. We also want to affix a commemorative plaque on it.

Our fight is difficult as we need, both money and further support from the
Tunisian government which is not sensitized enough to this project to take
the necessary decisions...

That is why we created this petition. We hope to collect a sufficient number
of signatures in order to present them to the Tunisian autorities, showing
them the interret of a great number of people all over the world for this
project.

Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Derek Thompson (Star Wars conceptual artist), Nick
Maley (SFX opperator and Cantina character Dannik Jerriko) Phil Brown (uncle
Owen in star wars episode 4) and Richard Bonehill (playing Nien Numb and
many characters in original trilogy) have already signs, i hope you can do
the same.

Yes come on guys lets support this - sign the man's petition!! Thanks Boni for bringing this to everyone's attention.
The site also contains photos of visits to other sites in Southern Tunisia. Vic and I went there in 1994 and the photos bring it all back. We were at both Matmata and Chott el Jerid.
One thing that occurs to me is -what are they going to do with it if they do save it? Put a plaque on it...good...and then? This part of Tunisia is very poor (as you can see in the photos) and although there is tourism its not huge .... if the building isnt useful in some way it will be left to rot . . . the Trogladites and Berbers of this area are living on a subsistance economy. the reason the Lars homestead has survived so well is that it has been lived in all these years ...not surprising as Lucas based it on the underground houses of the area. They are pretty amazing - one that we were in had adapted Afrika Corps petrol cans from WWII as their water tank! the swasztikas gave me quite a shock sticking out of the sand! A better use than they were originally put to (I put this bit in for you Werner)
